What is Mead?
Mead is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting honey with water and yeast. The type of honey used, as well as the addition of fruits, spices, and herbs, results in a wide variety of flavors and styles. The fermentation process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the desired outcome.
Mead and Ancient Traditions
Mead is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages in the world, with a history dating back to ancient civilizations. It is believed that mead was the first fermented drink ever made. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that mead was a gift from the gods and played a significant role in many mythological stories. Homer, the ancient Greek poet, mentions mead in his epic poem ‘’The Odyssey’’ referring to it as ‘’ambrosia’’ the drink of the gods believed to give immortality.
The Tradition of Mead and Marriage
There is a tradition called ‘’honeymoon’’ that comes from the ancient practice of providing newlywed couples with a month’s supply of mead, symbolizing their future happiness. It was believed that drinking mead during the first month of marriage would bring good luck and fertility. Today, the tradition of drinking mead together has largely been forgotten, but some meaderies and honey-based craft beverage producers still offer special honeymoon meads
for newlyweds.
