7 therapeutic properties of honey
Some of its therapeutic properties remain unknown even today, but we do know that honey is literally… medicine.
Honey is of better quality when it comes from regions with a dry climate, as it contains large amounts of active ingredients as a result of its low water content. As a general ratio, honey contains 16–17% water, 77–78% carbohydrates (mainly fructose and glucose) and 6% all the remaining ingredients (organic acids, proteins, amino acids, trace elements, enzymes, vitamins and various aromatic substances).
Therapeutic properties
Honey attracts great interest from the scientific community, possessing significant therapeutic properties which even today remain unknown in their full extent. Let us get to know the most important ones:
Metabolism: honey is recommended against obesity caused by defective metabolism, excessive insulin production and water retention in the tissues.
Heart – circulatory system: glucose, the main sugar of honey, is an important source of energy for the heart. It also regulates the contractions of the myocardium, enhances the dilation of the blood vessels and reduces elevated blood pressure.
Anaemia: the amount of haemoglobin increases with the consumption of honey, mainly due to its content of copper and iron, which is in fact of organic origin and therefore 100% absorbable by our organism without creating problems of constipation.
Gastrointestinal disorders: honey is considered an alkaline food due to the mineral salts it contains, which reduce the acidity of the stomach. It is also a valuable means of protection against ulcers of the stomach and duodenum thanks to its antibacterial and healing action. Finally, it is one of the best natural mild laxatives.
Liver: the liver is the factory of the organism, where useful substances are synthesised, while others that are dangerous (e.g. toxins) are broken down. The glucose that honey contains increases the glycogen reserves in the liver, which enhances these processes and increases the organism’s resistance to infections.
Kidneys: honey contains very little protein and almost no salt, substances that are not permitted for people with kidney diseases. In addition, it has a clear diuretic action and limits the bacteria of the bladder thanks to its antiseptic properties.
Skin: honey has healing and regenerative properties, stimulating the growth and division of cells. This particular action of it as an elixir of beauty is what makes it a basic ingredient of cosmetic creams with excellent results.
