Honey & cinnamon: All their therapeutic properties

5 September 2018

Honey and cinnamon are two natural ingredients with multiple benefits for human health.

We can use nutritious honey and fragrant cinnamon in drinks, sweets, or wherever else we wish, in order to enjoy their unique therapeutic properties.

It is best to choose Ceylon cinnamon rather than Cassia, as the former contains significantly lower amounts of coumarin, a substance that can prove toxic to the liver in large doses. As for honey, it should be consumed in as pure a form as possible; we should not boil it together with other ingredients, and we do not put it in the microwave oven. Honey does not, however, lose its nutritional value when we mix it with hot water.

Cinnamon

  • According to the American Library of Medicine, cinnamon helps to address muscle spasms, the tendency to vomit, diarrhoea, the common cold, and erectile problems.
  • According to the non-profit organisation Diabetes UK, cinnamon can also help in the more effective management of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
  • According to the American Institute of Health, the cinnamaldehyde in cinnamon can also help in combating infections from bacteria and fungi.
  • Researchers from Tel Aviv University found that a component of cinnamon (CEppt) can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A neurologist from the Medical Center of the American Rush University maintains that cinnamon may also prove beneficial for patients with multiple sclerosis, as it helps to halt the progression of the disease.
  • A study from Pennsylvania State University also demonstrated that cinnamon helps the body to manage the consumption of fats more effectively.

Honey

  • A study published in the review British Medical Journal demonstrates that honey can help in the prevention of gastroesophageal reflux.
  • A study published in the same scientific journal also shows that honey reduces the duration of symptoms in young children with bacterial gastroenteritis.
  • A study carried out by researchers at the University of Amsterdam and published in 2010 in the review FASEB Journal demonstrated that honey has the property of fighting bacteria, and so it can protect against a broad spectrum of infections.
  • Honey is, finally, ideal for combating coughs, even in very young children, a theory confirmed by a study published in the review Pediatrics.
