Which resistant microbes does honey combat?
The health-beneficial properties of honey have been confirmed by a multitude of studies.
Honey has antimicrobial, anticancer and antioxidant properties. According to the experts, in fact, the darker its colour, the more powerful an antioxidant it is.
According to British scientists, the high sugar content of honey combined with its thick, viscous form make it an effective opponent of microbes that display resistance to antibiotics.
Researchers from Cardiff University in Britain and the University of Waikato in New Zealand reached the conclusion that honey could prove particularly effective in tackling the treatment-superresistant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a hospital microbe that afflicts numerous patients worldwide.
The scientists demonstrated that the bees’ product, when applied topically, functioned as a shield against infection in cases of ulcers and abscesses that had previously shown exceptional tolerance to treatment with antibiotics.
The properties of honey in question are attributed to a specific group of enzymes, which originate either from the bees themselves or from the pollen of flowers.
An earlier study had shown that honey contains antioxidant substances, which have the property of reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.
